BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to hire an additional 250 sanitation workers for solid waste management in the city. Applications from Mission Shakti groups, transgenders, self-help groups and other voluntary organisations have been invited.
“The city’s population is increasing and we need more manpower to look after the solid waste management. We have published an advertisement asking the interest groups to apply. Those selected will be hired as Swachh Sathis and Supervisors. One Swachh Sathi is required for 600 households,” BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation) Suvendu Swain said on Monday.
As per the plan, the civic body will deploy 152 Swachh Sathis in the southeast zone, 53 in north zone and 45 in southwest zone. The Swachh Sathis will collect waste door-to-door and then segregate the solid waste.
At present, three private agencies, hired by the civic body, manage the city’s solid waste. While solid waste management is looked after by private agencies at 57 wards, BMC look after it across 10 wards. The sanitation workers engaged in collecting waste desilt and clean drains, besides doing other sanitation-related activities. The BMC has engaged about 3,200 persons for the door-to-door collection of garbage, segregation, etc.
